The 27 standard volumes
This is the version most people picture when they think of collecting Fullmetal Alchemist: 27 individual paperbacks, each with its own cover. It takes up more room, but there is something satisfying about seeing the entire numbered run lined up.
It's also forgiving if one book gets damaged or goes missing. Replacing Volume 12 is a lot easier than replacing a larger omnibus that contains several volumes' worth of story.
The 9 Fullmetal Alchemist 3-in-1 books
If shelf space matters, this is the obvious contender. Nine larger paperbacks collect the same 27-volume story, so you end up with a much shorter row of books.
Just remember that the numbering is completely different. 3-in-1 Volume 4 is not “standard Volume 4 in a thicker book”; it contains several of the original volumes.
The 18 Fullmetal Edition hardcovers
This is the fancy one. The Fullmetal Edition is larger, hardcover and built for people who care about the physical object as much as simply having the story. VIZ published 18 of them to cover the complete manga.
If you like oversized art, hardcovers and a shelf that looks more like a premium book collection, this is the edition to look at first. If you just want to read Fullmetal Alchemist for the least fuss, it's probably more book than you need.
