How many Initial D Omnibus volumes are out?
As of August 2026, Initial D Omnibus Volumes 1 to 10 have been released in the current English print programme.
Further books are already listed to follow, with Omnibus Volume 11 collecting original Volumes 21-22 and Volume 12 collecting Volumes 23-24.
Important: the omnibus numbering is not the same as the original Initial D numbering. Omnibus Volume 10 already takes you through original Volume 20.
Is the Initial D Omnibus the complete series yet?
No.
The original Initial D manga ran for 48 volumes, so the new English 2-in-1 programme still has more of Takumi's story to collect.
The good news for new collectors is that the numbering is straightforward. You can simply buy Omnibus 1, then 2, then 3 and continue as new books arrive.
Do you need the old Initial D manga editions?
No.
The new Kodansha omnibus starts again from the beginning of the manga, so you do not need an older English volume before it.
Omnibus Volume 1 begins Takumi's story with original Volumes 1 and 2.
Older editions may still interest collectors, but they are not required for somebody who simply wants to read Initial D in English today.
What is Initial D about?
Takumi Fujiwara spends his mornings delivering tofu for his father's shop, driving the mountain roads of Mount Akina in a Toyota AE86.
He does not initially think of himself as a street racer.
The local racing scene has other ideas.
Years of repetitive mountain driving have given Takumi instincts and car control that experienced racers struggle to understand, and the mysterious Eight-Six begins attracting attention from teams across the area.
Is Initial D only for car fans?
No, although knowing cars certainly gives you another layer to enjoy.
The races involve technique, vehicle setup, road conditions and the strengths and weaknesses of different cars, but the basic appeal is easy to understand even if you cannot identify every engine code.
Initial D is also a sports-style progression story about somebody slowly discovering how unusual his own ability actually is.
Readers interested in street racing, cars, sports manga, technical competition, rivalries and protagonists who are much better at something than they initially realise.
