Manga Like Vagabond: Mature Historical & Seinen Series to Read Next
Vagabond is difficult to replace because the sword fights are only part of why it works. Musashi's changing idea of strength, Takehiko Inoue's artwork, the historical setting and the quieter periods between violence matter just as much.
Read Vinland Saga next if you want another historical story about violence, revenge and a protagonist whose understanding of strength changes over time.
Choose Kingdom if you want far larger battles and military strategy, or The Climber if the introspective character journey was more important to you than the samurai setting.
Our top manga to read after Vagabond
Kingdom
Xin wants to become a great general during China's Warring States period, pulling the story into battles, military strategy and political conflict on a much larger scale.
View Kingdom Vol. 1The Climber
No samurai, but Buntaro Mori's obsession with climbing gives you another deeply internal story about isolation, ambition and what drives a person to keep pushing.
View The Climber Vol. 11. Vinland Saga
Read this if you liked: historical realism, revenge and a protagonist forced to rethink what strength actually means.
Thorfinn grows up among the Vikings responsible for destroying his childhood, driven by the desire to avenge his father.
That is only the beginning of what the story eventually asks him to confront.
Vagabond and Vinland Saga both understand that following a violent person becomes more interesting when the question changes from "can he win?" to "what does winning actually solve?"
2. Kingdom
Read this if you liked: historical settings and want the scale turned up dramatically.
Kingdom follows Xin, a war orphan who dreams of becoming one of the greatest generals under the heavens.
Where Vagabond often narrows its focus to individual duels and Musashi's internal development, Kingdom opens out into enormous armies, sieges, rival generals and court politics.
It is more bombastic, but the historical setting and long climb from nobody to legendary warrior make the crossover obvious.
3. Berserk
Read this if you liked: exceptional artwork, brutal combat and an adult protagonist shaped by violence.
Berserk replaces historical Japan with dark fantasy, but Guts is another protagonist whose skill with a weapon is only one part of what defines him.
The world is far more supernatural than Vagabond's, yet both series are willing to slow down and deal with trauma, purpose and what remains after violence.
4. The Climber
Read this if you liked: solitude, obsession and watching a character's internal life become the real story.
Buntaro Mori is introduced to climbing almost by accident.
It quickly becomes the one thing that makes sense to him.
The setting could hardly be more different from Vagabond, but both are interested in men who become consumed by a pursuit and slowly discover that mastering the pursuit does not automatically mean mastering themselves.
5. Baki the Grappler
Read this if you liked: martial arts, physical limits and characters obsessed with becoming stronger.
Baki is much louder and more exaggerated than Vagabond.
But if Musashi's relentless pursuit of martial strength is specifically what you want more of, Baki takes that obsession and pushes it into increasingly extreme territory.
6. Attack on Titan
Read this if you liked: war, characters changed by violence and stories where the idea of an enemy becomes less simple over time.
Attack on Titan has no samurai and no historical Japanese setting.
What it shares is an interest in how people are shaped by conflict, how hatred is inherited and how a person's original goals can look very different once they understand more of the world.
Which manga should a Vagabond fan start with?
I want historical character drama
Vinland Saga is the strongest overall match.
I want huge battles
Kingdom takes historical warfare to an entirely different scale.
I want dark mature fantasy
Berserk is the obvious route if realism is not essential.
I want introspection
The Climber is one of the best choices if the internal journey mattered most.
