Pokémon Card Grading Services Compared

Pokémon Card Grading Services Compared: PSA, CGC, Beckett, ACE, TAG & UK Options

Introduction

For UK collectors, grading Pokémon cards now involves more than just PSA. CGC, Beckett, ACE, Imperium, TAG and several UK submission partners all bring something different to the table. Understanding the strengths of each service helps you choose the right path for your collection.

If you want to keep your cards in top condition before sending them for grading, you can follow our guide on card storage and protection.

Before you grade: protect the card properly so you do not lose a grade
Most “surprise” grades come from tiny edge wear, surface scratches, and pressure marks picked up during storage or handling. Inner sleeve + semi rigid (or a clean toploader) is the easiest win before submission.

PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator)

PSA is the most widely recognised grading company in the hobby. PSA 10 cards typically have the strongest global demand and the most established population reports for both vintage and modern Pokémon.

  • Strongest resale recognition worldwide
  • Clean, familiar label that collectors instantly recognise
  • No PSA grading facility in the UK
  • Most UK submissions go through middleman services or submission partners

PSA is usually the first choice when your priority is long-term liquidity and collector demand. If you want to browse slabs already in stock, you can view our Pokémon graded cards collection.

CGC (Certified Guaranty Company)

CGC has built a strong reputation for consistency and clear grading standards. Their slabs offer UV protection and optional subgrades, which many collectors appreciate for modern and Japanese cards.

  • Transparent grading with subgrades for centering, corners, edges and surface
  • Durable, clear slab design with strong shelf presence
  • Official UK submission partner network to simplify sending cards

Beckett Grading Services (BGS)

Beckett is known for its subgrades and the iconic Black Label 10, which carries a lot of prestige in the hobby. Many collectors aim for BGS black labels on top-end cards.

  • Subgrades included on most labels for deeper detail
  • Black Label 10s are highly sought after by premium collectors
  • No UK grading facility, so submissions go via UK partners

Beckett tends to be stricter than PSA at the top end, so it is often chosen for cards that truly stand out in condition and rarity.

ACE Grading (UK)

ACE is a UK-based grading service that has grown quickly thanks to its unique label designs and quick turnaround. It is a popular choice for collectors who want visually striking slabs without international shipping complications.

  • Based in the UK, with UK customer support
  • Colourful themed and custom label options
  • Shorter turnaround times than most international services

Imperium Grading (UK)

Imperium Grading is a UK grading company preparing to launch in early 2026. Based on its published material, it is positioning itself around UK-made slabs, included grading reports, hand-drawn art labels, and a stricter top grade called Imperium 10.

  • UK-focused grading option for Pokémon and One Piece at launch
  • Detailed reports included as standard with subgrades and defect call-outs
  • UK-made slabs and optional hand-drawn art labels
  • Still pre-launch, so long-term market performance and real turnaround consistency are not established yet

Imperium looks most relevant for UK collectors who want a domestic grading option and value presentation, reports and slab design. For a fuller breakdown, see our Imperium Grading guide.

TAG Grading (via UK Submission Partners)

TAG is a tech-driven grading company that uses automated, high-resolution scanning and an internal scoring system to provide very detailed feedback. Instead of relying solely on manual inspection, TAG focuses on consistency and data.

  • Fully tech-led grading with precise measurements
  • Digital reports explaining exactly why a card received its grade
  • Modern slab design that emphasises the card and data

TAG is based in the US, but UK collectors can submit through partners such as Grade With TAG or The SubCenter. These partners handle customs, shipping, and bulk submissions for you.

Other UK Services & Submission Partners

  • Handles paperwork and shipping for you
  • Offers insured services and bulk options
  • Useful if you are nervous about international postage

The SubCenter

The SubCenter is another UK hub that supports submissions to PSA, CGC, Beckett, TAG and more. It is designed to make grading accessible even if you have never submitted cards before.

  • Bulk discounts for larger submissions
  • Customs, forms, and shipping handled by the service
  • Beginner-friendly process with guidance

Which Service Should You Choose?

PSA — Best choice if you care most about long-term recognition, population reports and global resale demand.

CGC — Great option if you value consistent grading, subgrades and a clean modern slab, especially for modern or Japanese cards.

Beckett — Ideal for premium cards where subgrades and the possibility of a Black Label 10 feel important.

ACE — Perfect for UK collectors who want fast turnaround and strong visual presentation with themed labels.

Imperium — Worth watching if you want a UK-based grading option with included reports, UK-made slabs and a more presentation-led approach, but it is still best treated as a pre-launch option until live performance is established.

TAG — Best for collectors who like tech-led grading, detailed reports, and a data-focused approach.

UK submission partners — Safest route if you do not want to handle international shipping, customs and bulk submissions yourself.

If you prefer to add graded cards directly to your collection rather than submit them yourself, you can browse our Pokémon graded cards collection for PSA, CGC and ACE slabs.

FAQ

Do all grading companies use the same criteria?

Yes. All reputable grading companies judge the same four areas: centering, surface, edges and corners. The differences are in how strict they are at the top end, and how they show that information on the label.

Does grading always increase a card’s value?

No. Grading can increase value for desirable cards in strong condition, but it does not automatically make every card worth more. Factors like rarity, language, demand and the final grade all matter. For many lower-value cards, good storage can be enough.

How should I store my cards before grading?

Use inner sleeves, semi-rigid holders, and low-humidity storage. Avoid stacking raw cards loosely or leaving them exposed on desks. For a deeper breakdown, read our guide on how to store and protect your trading cards long term.

For any accessories (inner sleeves, binders, toploaders, storage), use our Vault X recommendations page.

How do I check for authenticity before submission?

There are multiple checks to confirm authenticity with your cards. You can check out our guide that explains How to Spot Fake Pokémon Cards.

Is Imperium Grading live yet?

At the time of writing, Imperium is still in pre-launch mode. It has published pricing, slab details, grading reports and supported games, but collectors should treat it as an upcoming option rather than a fully established grading track record.

Ready to prep cards for grading?
The easiest way to protect potential grades is simple: inner sleeve, clean holder, careful storage. Use our Vault X recommendations to get the right kit for UK collectors.
